I’ve never done a cleanse. But It turns out, a lot of people are big into them as a way to prevent cold sore outbreaks.
I read the following about something called “The Master Cleanse” in a cold sore forum thread:
“for those who don’t know, a gentleman named Stanley Burroughs came up with this fast back in the early/mid 70s.
Basically, you fast for a minimum of 10 days, max of 40. Most people do 10-21 days.
Each day you drink “lemonade”…which is REAL lemons/lemon juice, Grade B maple syrup and CAYENNE pepper. you have 6-12 glasses a day…each glass is 10 oz.
Every morning you do a SALT water flush using non-iodinized salt.
So you can drink your lemonade every day, and have a cup of peppermint tea as well, but that is it.
Flush in the morning with the Salt water. (this will make you need to go to the bathroom about 1/2 an hour to an hour after drinking it, thus, eliminate all the toxins from your body thoroughly.)”
Interesting idea, for sure. And I can see why people would go for it.
The idea being the cleanse will flush out toxins from your body, thus making your biological machinery squeaky clean and running at peak efficiency.
And if your immune system is working unhindered, it can help prevent your next cold sore, right?
And heck, what if it makes you cold sore free for a few months after that?
I’d say the trade off of being hungry for a couple of weeks in exchange for not getting throbbing blisters for a few months is worth it.
I can (in theory) see the appeal.
Except for one teensy little problem: I am incapable of going weeks without actual food.
I have far too little self-control.
But I also think cleansing is a waste of time and won’t actually help you fend off your next outbreak (or anything for that matter) for a couple of reasons.
First, the herpes virus isn’t a toxin you can “flush out” at will.
It’s a permanent infection that hides deep within your nervous system, far out of the reach of lemon juice or cayenne pepper.
And no cleanse in the world is gonna force it out of hiding.
Second, cleansing sounds great and all, but it has some serious drawbacks.
Mainly, a severe lack of nutrients, vitamins and minerals.
You know, the things your body actually NEEDS to stay healthy and your immune system REQUIRES to fend off attacking invaders like bacteria and viruses?
In fact, going too long without proper nutrition can lead to much more serious health conditions related to malnutrition.
Case in point:
A little further down in the same forum thread, a hospital employee writes about how a woman came in with a stroke, and that doctor’s said it was because she was following this very type of cleanse.
Even scarier, the woman died a short time after.
Look, I’m not saying long term fasting doesn’t have benefits, especially for flushing out toxins from the body.
But when you go for that long without proper nutrition, bad stuff will happen (it’s a matter of when, not if).
Your metabolism crashes, and every system in your body becomes weak.
Including your immune system.
And when your immune system is in a weakened state, the herpes virus is free to have a field day on your lips and face.
Look, there are easier ways for you to “cold sore proof” yourself.
Ways that don’t involve going without food for weeks at a time and even risking health issues much, MUCH more serious than cold sore outbreaks.
